A 1-1 draw in a local derby is never a bad result, but Celtic fans were a little deflated after their side’s result vs. bitter rivals Rangers on Sunday, with some in the Transfer Tavern quipping that they shouldn’t be held at home by a newly-promoted team!
To be honest, the Gers are not quite the same new side up in the big time proposition many teams have been in recent memory, with the Ibrox outfit’s fall from grace not down to on-field failings alone.
The 1-1 draw leaves Celtic a whopping 25 points clear of Aberdeen at the top of the Scottish Premiership and well on course to lift the second trophy of Brendan Rodgers’ debut season in the dugout, but Leigh Griffiths has responded savagely to the celebrations of Rangers fans after the draw.
Talking to the Glasgow Evening Times, the 26-year-old fans’ favourite hit out at the optimism among the club’s supporters and suggested that their happiness at the result will only make the Bhoys stronger when the clubs meet in the Scottish Cup semi-final in April:
“There will be a lot of hype again now,
“Rangers fans will all get a bit excited now, thinking that they can come and do exactly the same to us in the semi-final as they did last season.
“But that was probably our worst performance of the season last year – and it took the game going to penalties for us to lose it.
“Again, you would have to say that Sunday’s game wouldn’t have been anywhere the level that we have shown throughout the season. We know we are capable of playing so much better than that.
“You saw the Rangers fans after the game cheering as though they had won the league. They would have snapped anyone’s hand for a point before they came here.
“It just makes us all the more determined that we will try and get our focus back and keep moving towards the title and see where we are next month when we play at Hampden.”
