Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet is on Celtic’s ‘watchlist’ but they are unable to make a firm approach amid the managerial uncertainty at the club, according to a report from The Scotsman.
Nisbet scored 18 goals and provided eight assists in 44 appearances for Hibernian over the course of the 2020/21 season after signing from Dunfermline. That equates to a direct goal contribution every 132 minutes.
The 24-year-old still has three years left on his contract at Easter Road and is valued at £2.7m by Transfermarkt. He has also been included in the Scotland squad for the upcoming European Championship.
Celtic may be on the lookout for a proven Premiership goalscorer, with Odsonne Edouard seemingly closing in on an exit from Parkhead.
Celtic have yet to make any formal overtures, but Hibernian fully expect offers for Nisbet during the transfer window.
The Hoops may be given the green light to make an offer when they finalise the appointment of their new manager. It was reported over the weekend that they were in advanced talks with Ange Postecoglou.
Intriguingly, Hibs are said to be eyeing Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths as a possible replacement. His contract is due to expire on Monday, although Celtic have the option to extend it for a further year (The Scotsman), and the 30-year-old has already had two loan spells at Easter Road.
Perhaps the sensible thing to do here would be to extend Griffiths’ deal and then attempt to negotiate some form of exchange. Nisbet would be a solid if unspectacular signing for Celtic, with the comfort of knowing that he is capable of scoring abundantly at Premiership level.
This could possibly be one of a number of moves simply awaiting a go-ahead from a newly-appointed manager at Parkhead, making the swift appointment of Neil Lennon’s full-time successor advisable.
In other news, there’s an update on talks with Postecoglou.
