Manchester United have been linked with a move to bring Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford, with the midfielder continuing to attract attention following his impressive spell in Italian football.
The Scotland international enjoyed a successful departure from United, establishing himself as a key player for Napoli and helping the Italian side win the Serie A title.
His performances have prompted suggestions that the Red Devils could look to reunite with their former academy graduate as they continue to reshape their midfield.
However, fresh reports have now emerged suggesting a return to Manchester may not be as straightforward as some supporters would hope.
Manchester United Unlikely to Re-sign Scott McTominay
According to Football Insider, Manchester United face an uphill battle to bring McTominay back to the club, with the recruitment team focused on signing younger players rather than pursuing the 29-year-old.
Transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke reported that United are unlikely to make an approach for the midfielder in the near future, despite renewed speculation over a possible reunion. McTominay turns 30 in December, and the club are understood to be prioritising players who better fit their long-term recruitment strategy.
O’Rourke explained: “I would say it’s unlikely that he returns to Manchester United. He’s 29 now, and is turning 30 in December, so is coming to the latter stages of his career.”
The journalist also highlighted McTominay’s success since leaving England, pointing to his impact at Napoli and his performances for Scotland as reasons why he remains a highly regarded midfielder.
McTominay joined Napoli in 2024 and made an immediate impact, helping the club secure the Serie A title during his first season. He continued to contribute in the following campaign, scoring 14 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions last season.
His recent fitness issues had raised questions about his availability, but Napoli confirmed this week that he has been cleared to return to action after undergoing a procedure to address a heart rhythm problem. He has resumed full training with the Italian side.
Despite his achievements abroad, a return to United appears unlikely for now. The club strengthened their midfield options during the summer and are expected to concentrate on other areas of the squad in upcoming transfer windows.
Former United striker Wayne Rooney has previously voiced his disappointment at the decision to sell McTominay, arguing that his work rate and ability to score important goals would still benefit the team.
Nevertheless, the latest report suggests United’s recruitment priorities have shifted. While supporters may welcome the prospect of McTominay returning to his boyhood club, the Red Devils appear more focused on investing in younger talent.
