Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has given supporters some insight about how they could play under Frank Lampard this upcoming season.
The 29-year-old is part of a Chelsea pre-season squad who are currently training in Dublin ahead of friendlies against Bohemians and St. Patrick’s Athletic and has been discussing what he expects life to be under his new boss.
“I’m really looking forward to the new season,” the Chelsea captain told the club’s official website.
“It’s always a lot of hard work during pre-season but it’s the work you have to put in, to create a good base for our physical condition,” he later added. “We want to play with high intensity and we want to be dominant in games, the manager has explained how he wants us to play and we are all enjoying the camp so far.”
The above makes for good reading for the faction of the Stamford Bridge faithful who grew disgruntled with Maurizio Sarri’s style of football and his team selections last season.
A section of the club’s away support were heard venting their anger towards Sarri-ball in a very unconvincing 2-1 win over Cardiff City at the end of March, which came after the previous dissatisfaction over the exclusion of Callum Hudson-Odoi, something highlighted by talkSPORT.
Things could be about to change, though, with Azpilicueta confirming the team will look to play at a high intensity under Lampard while the Chelsea boss has recently spoken about his desire to build his side around Hudson-Odoi.
“I know the club want him to stay and for me, he is going to be central for us on the pitch and that is the opportunity that is really in front of him now, certainly from where I am sitting. So that is something I will speak to him about and I hope he stays,” Lampard told chelseafc.com.
Ultimately, for those who could not take to Sarri’s style and felt disillusioned by his decisions, next season might just be a bit more enjoyable.
