Liam Delap’s time at Chelsea has quickly turned into a major concern for the club.
Signed for £30 million from Ipswich Town last summer, the striker was brought in with high expectations, but he has struggled badly to make any real impact at Stamford Bridge. With just two goals in 36 appearances, his return has fallen well short of what was anticipated when the deal was completed.
The lack of output has left Chelsea increasingly frustrated, with his role in the squad now under serious question. What was meant to be a long-term attacking solution has instead become a problem the club are already looking to correct, with a summer departure now considered a realistic outcome.
As a result, attention has quickly turned toward the transfer market as Chelsea look to bring in a more reliable centre-forward option.
Chelsea Interested in Igor Thiago
Chelsea are among the clubs monitoring Brentford striker Igor Thiago, who has enjoyed a standout season in front of goal, according to TEAMtalk.
The Brazilian has been described as “complete” by Brentford boss Keith Andrews, highlighting both his physical presence and all-round attacking contribution.
Thiago has been in exceptional form, registering 24 goals in 35 appearances and establishing himself as one of the most productive forwards in English football this season. His performances have not only elevated his reputation domestically but also earned him recognition at international level, with the striker breaking into the Brazil setup.
His form has naturally attracted wider interest, with Tottenham Hotspur also credited with keeping tabs on his situation, alongside other Premier League rivals. There is even growing expectation that Brentford could be forced into considering offers, particularly as they have already begun identifying potential replacements, including Matviy Ponomarenko.
However, any decision will not be straightforward. Thiago remains a key part of Brentford’s plans, and the club are not actively pushing him toward the exit unless a significant offer arrives.
For Chelsea, the need is increasingly urgent. Delap’s struggles have left them without a consistent goal threat, and reinforcements in that area are now viewed as a priority rather than a luxury. Thiago’s profile — young, physical, and proven in the Premier League — makes him a strong candidate for that role.
