Tottenham Hotspur defender Younes Kaboul is wanted by Olympique Marseille to reinforce their back line following the departures of their big-names. The Ligue 1 side have lost defenders Taye Taiwo to AC Milan and Gabriel Heinze on a free and want Kaboul to fill the gap.
Kaboul, who is being linked with a possible return to his French homeland, originally joined Spurs in 2007 only to be bought by then-Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp a year later. Redknapp then brought Kaboul back to White Hart Lane in January 2010, and last season the Frenchman scored the vital goal as Tottenham won at Arsenal in the league for the first time since 1993.
The 25-year-old has seen his appearances restricted to just 19 games this season after an injury-plagued spell and because of the arrival of William Gallas from Arsenal last summer. The defender has now broken into France boss Laurent Blanc’s squad, and has been told he needs to be playing regular first-team football if he wants to be part of their Euro 2012 plans, making a move away from White Hart Lane ever more likely.
There are several problems with the deal going through. Spurs are unlikely to want to sell Kaboul with Jonathan Woodgate being released and constant doubts over Ledley King’s fitness.
Kaboul’s wages are also an issue as Marseille will struggle to match his current £66,000-a-week deal plus his £13.5million valuation.
