Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to a post put out by their club’s Twitter account. Newcastle tweeted a picture of Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey in training, just minutes after Gareth Southgate announced the England squad for upcoming friendlies against The Netherlands and Italy.

The Newcastle fans propping our bar up can’t quite believe that neither Shelvey or Lascelles got the call to represent their country. However, the fans may also be slightly relieved as it ensures the players will be fit and ready for the Premier League’s return after the international break. The pair have both been in scintillating form for the North East club as they aim to help Newcastle avoid relegation back to the Championship after coming up last year.
The Magpies will be prioritising staying in the Premier League, although it will no doubt be a blow for both Shelvey and Lascelles as they’re overlooked for the likes of Jake Livermore and Alfie Mawson in the England squad. The England pair will be hoping they can do enough in the final eight games of the season to convince Gareth Southgate that they deserve a place on the plane to Russia in summer.
With that in mind, here’s the local Toon Army’s verdict:
How has Southgate even got that job

A photo of two English men who should be in the England squad but have been overlooked? How coincidental
