Our Manchester City fans here in the Transfer Tavern simply cannot believe what happened to them last night in the Champions League.
Going into the game against Monaco they were 5-3 up after an entertaining game at the Etihad and, whilst few expected it to be 0-0 for the 2nd leg, City keeping things tight had to be high on the agenda.
Instead, though, Pep Guardiola went out all guns blazing – highlighting the fact he doesn’t trust his defence – and it duly came back to haunt him.
Monaco beat the Citizens 3-1 to dump them out of the competition and for many it just highlighted how far City, for all their talent, still need to come to be a serious force in Europe.
Nothing suggests that more, though, than the following stat from OptaJoe on Twitter:
5 – Man City are the first team in Champions League history to be eliminated in a knockout tie after scoring 5 goals in the first leg. Wild.

That is some record, then, and not one the Citizens will have surely wanted next to their name.
