Danny Drinkwater would be a brilliant signing for Southampton

Southampton again find themselves right in the mix of the relegation battle but with a favourable run-in seeing as they play just one of the top six, the Saints may have just enough, yet again. Phew, right?

Indeed, the very same situation was apparent last season as well with Southampton really struggling to acquire the right players in order to take them forward. Money has not been pumped into the squad like fans would have hoped for but that could all change this summer if they’re going to show Ralph Hasenhuttl they’re ambition.

Right now, quality is a rarity throughout Southampton’s squad and that must change. Positions all over the pitch have the potential to be improved upon and one of those is central-midfield.

With that in mind, a man who has been starved of first-team action and football, in general, this season is Chelsea’s Danny Drinkwater.

Drinkwater, (who is valued at £9 million on Transfermarkt) hasn’t appeared once in the Premier League during this campaign and with no injury, he has simply been cast aside by manager Maurizio Sarri. As an experienced 29-year-old Premier League player, the lack of game-time will be extremely disappointing as fans will best remember him for playing a telling part in Leicester City’s title-winning campaign.

Now though, his move to Stamford Bridge has hindered his chances of moving to another Premier League side or getting back into the England squad because of his huge wages and his lack of game-time.

Southampton, if a cut-price deal was available, would have themselves a very capable football, should he deliver even half of the ability he showed when at the peak of his career.

With great tenacity and determination, a move down to the South Coast could be the revival Danny Drinkwater must be so desperate for.
