Aston Villa v West Ham – 15:00
Having lost manager Martin O’Neill, who handed in his resignation this week after a dispute with Chairman Randy Lerner, many people are waiting to see what Villa team will take to the pitch for their opening encounter this Saturday.
Whatever side is picked by caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald, it is unlikely to feature England international James Milner who is believed to be set to join Manchester City for around £30 million.
With Milner’s expected departure imminent and no new transfers arriving at the Midlands outfit, expectations will fall heavily on Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor if the club are to build on their 6th place finish last season.
Following last seasons battle against relegation, West Ham are looking to stay well clear of the drop, with new manager Avram Grant taking control of the Upton Park side. Frederic Piquionne, who spent last season on loan at Portsmouth, arrives to boost the clubs attacking line and the Frenchman is joined by Thomas Hitzlsperger and Tal Ben Haim in providing much needed experience to the Hammers squad this season.
With Aston Villa in such disarray behind the scenes, focus may not be what it should going into the first league game. For this season I think West Ham might be able to sneak 3 points and get their season up and running with a bang.
