Former BBC pundit Noel Whelan has claimed that Sean Dyche would be a ‘stunning’ appointment by Glasgow Rangers should Giovanni van Bronckhorst go.

The Lowdown: Manager links emerging

A few manager links are emerging out of Ibrox at the moment, with Van Bronckhorst’s predecessor Steven Gerrard and his former assistant Michael Beale some of the latest names to be mentioned.

Scottish football pundit Charlie Nicholas has also backed Dyche to be a serious contender for the job should Van Bronckhorst go, as he has worked with sporting director Ross Wilson before.

The former Burnley boss has also hinted that he could take the Gers job should he be offered it, with Van Bronckorst reportedly on the brink of the sack.

The Latest: Be a ‘stunning’ appointment

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan has claimed that Dyche would be a ‘stunning’ appointment at Ibrox, labelling the job he did at Turf Moor as ‘fantastic’.

“Burnley were not the most financially well-off club when Dyche was there.

“The job he did there was fantastic.

“They were always very organised and hard to beat – even against the bigger sides.

“He would be a stunning appointment for Rangers.

“They’re just scraping through games at the moment, and that shouldn’t be the case with some of the players they’ve got in the final third.

“This is a team who should be winning games comfortably most weeks.”

The Verdict: Change needed

Given the latest poor result in the Scottish Premiership with the 1-1 draw at Saturday lunchtime away at St Mirren, a change is certainly needed for the Light Blues.

They are now nine points behind city rivals Celtic at the top of the SPFL table, and have only won two of their last seven games in total over all competitions.

Dyche has plenty of credentials, having kept Burnley in the Premier League for five straight seasons, including a remarkable seventh-placed finish in the 2017/18 campaign (Transfermarkt).

With the break for the FIFA World Cup coming up, and Dyche being out of a job at the moment, now presents the optimum opportunity for the Teddy Bears to make the switch before their league season resumes.
