Unai Emery has come into Arsenal and has already shaken things up. New signings and some high profile exits, the Gunners support are likely to be relieved that something of a revolution looks to be taking place in North London
Things had certainly gone stale at the Emirates under Arsene Wenger. His proud record of top-four finishes was no longer, and his legacy took something of a hit with a large section of supporters demanding the Frenchman leave.
A new era was badly needed, and with Spaniard Emery coming in, it looks to be well underway. However, it could be argued the Spaniard is not going far enough. Players such as Aaron Ramsey have been offered new contracts, when arguably injury prone players should have been moved on as part of the new era. Jack Wilshere is the latest Arsenal player to exit the Emirates, having signed at the London Stadium for West Ham United. These players who have frustrated and not delivered for the club leaving can only be good news.
Emery has brought in some serious talent to the club. He has brought in experience such as Stephan Lichsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who are ready to come and make an immediate impact at the Emirates.
With that in mind, here are three Arsenal players who really should not still be at the Emirates
Something of a controversial choice, but it is time the Welshman moved on.
A symbol of the frustrating football under Wenger, Ramsey does not seem quite up for the battle of Premier League football.
There is no doubt over Ramsey’s technical ability, providing valuable goals and assists from midfield, with eleven goals in a faltering Arsenal team last season. However, Ramsey registered just twenty-two premier league appearances last term, which has not been the first season he has struggled to register appearances. In the 2010/11 season, Ramsey registered just seven premier league appearances.
Emery needs a squad who are going to be available to him over the course of the gruelling season. Ramsey’s injury track record means the club should have considered showing him the exit door.
The Spaniard is a hugely frustrating player, and has outstayed his welcome at the Emirates.
Hector Bellerin has faced the wrath of his own supporters due to his poor performances, and he has also criticised sections of the Arsenal support. It would make sense for a player who has had open conflict with the fans to move on in this new era, with the negative aspects of Wenger’s reign needing to be removed.
Bellerin relies on pace, technically, he is not the most gifted player. The Barcelona born player is now 23 and has not kicked on as many thought he might. Rather than persisting with tried and tested failures like Bellerin, Emery should focus on new talent and players with more potential.
Simply not good enough, it is time Iwobi left the Gunners.
For a striker, his finishing is just not up to muster, and he loses his cool in one-on-ones all too regularly. Composure is such a key element of the game, particularly at the top level, and Alex Iwobi just completely lacks this element. Iwobi is now 22, and still has never stepped up to the plate and looked the real deal, he has always flattered to deceive.
The Nigerian has never scored more than three goals in a Premier League season. His hold up play and passing is also poor, even under Emery, it is hard to see the striker ever being a success at the Emirates. His time is up and he should move on from the club.
