According to a report from Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Everton and Tottenham have both been ‘in contact‘ over Manchester United loan defender Chris Smalling – with the Englishman impressing so far during his stint at AS Roma.
Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, Smalling, who started 24 games for United last season before being shipped off to Serie A, has been turning the heads of critics with his defensive performances in Italy – so much so that Everton and Spurs have reportedly joined the race to acquire his signature.
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has previous with Smalling, having managed United for two and a half seasons, while Carlo Ancelotti could have the favourable Italian contacts due to his impressive Serie A career. Compared to current centre-back Yerry Mina, Smalling has made more interceptions (2.2) and clearances (4.3) this campaign while the Colombian slightly edges it in terms of tackles completed (1.5), as per WhoScored.com.

However, regardless of the stats, many supporters are really not keen on a swoop for Smalling – with one fan even claiming that he is just ‘a new Ash Williams‘. Find all of their best comments down below.
