Plenty of Everton fans have compared recent transfer talk to the saga that included former Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme.
The former player is fondly remembered for his time with Barcelona, Villarreal, Boca Juniors and the Argentine national side.
A classic number ten, Riquelme would go on to win countless honours with Boca Juniors and Argentina, whilst also gaining individual recognition throughout his career, being nominated for the FIFPro World XI twice in 2006 and 2007.
It was during the summer of 2007 that Riquelme, playing for Villarreal at the time, would see a reported move to Everton in the press.
The premature and later incorrect post was deemed a ‘mistake’ by Everton, before the Daily Mail would later report that former Barcelona man had infact flown into Merseyside for talks with Goodison Park officials.
Riquelme later joined Boca Juniors in the summer of 2007, before retiring from the professional game in 2014, and Toffees fans have now compared his links to the club with that of recent reported moves for Allan, Everton Soares and Hirving Lozano, all of which have also gone on for a while.
Responding to a tweet by fan account @TheGwladysSt, fans offered the following responses:
I feel like Allan, Everton Soares and Lozano are all on course to contend with Riquelme and Yarmolenko for most transfer rumoured player to never end playing for Everton. The links just won’t go away!#EFC
