Everton: Fans divided over potential John Stones return

Reported Newcastle target John Stones has been tipped for an Everton return by Noel Whelan.

The former player believes the centre-back could favour a move back to his former club if Pep Guardiola permits him to leave Manchester City this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Whelan has given his take on the Newcastle transfer link, but the Blues are also in the running and the pundit believes that could suit him.

Stones spent three and a half years with the Merseyside outfit before his move to Manchester City in 2016 for £47.5million (via BBC Sport). The England international has won eight trophies with Guardiola’s side, including two Premier League titles and the FA Cup (via Transfermarkt).

Despite Whelan thinking an Everton move would be a good idea, Blues fans are divided over whether he should return. Responding to his quotes, relayed by the Liverpool ECHO and fan account @ToffeeTVEFC, one supporter has tweeted ‘I’d take him 100%’, perhaps remembering how good he was for them before his departure. Indeed, in the 14/15 season he won 2.6 aerial duels per game for the club in the league, with an average WhoScored rating of 7.17.

However, another doesn’t feel they need him and has commented ‘we’ve got Holgate’ – indeed Holgate has been impressive of late at centre-back for the Toffees, starting 19 league games and averaging 3.3 clearances a match (WhoScored).
