According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Newcastle United harbour an interest in bringing Everton defender Mason Holgate to St. James’ Park – with Toffees supporters lambasting the news on Twitter and hinting that the potential move is a pipe dream.
Holgate, who has started 13 Premier League games this campaign after a successful loan spell at West Bromwich Albion in 2018/19, has arguably been one of the Toffees’ key players defensively – averaging three clearances per game alongside centre-back partner Yerry Mina, as per WhoScored.com. The Englishman’s form has appeared to oust compatriot Michael Keane out of the starting eleven – with Holgate recording more tackles per game (1.5) than his out-of-form teammate. As a result, Everton supporters have been racking their brains over how the 23-year-old could be linked with a move away from Goodison Park – especially with the arrival of new manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Here’s how they responded on Twitter to the rumour:
Can’t see this happening, Holgate has been one of our best players this season.
