Everton: Danny Mills comments on Mason Holgate returning to training

Everton: Danny Mills comments on Mason Holgate returning to training - Everton News

Danny Mills has lauded the fact that Mason Holgate has returned to training for Everton as he tries to recover from a toe injury.

Indeed, the injury setback for the England U21 international had meant that he has not yet played a single game so far in the 2020/21 term.

Is Holgate the best centre-back at Everton?

The Goodison Park faithful have lost their last two matches in the Premier League away from home at Southampton and Newcastle United respectively, and so Mills believes that having Holgate back in training for the Merseyside club is a big boost for Carlo Ancelotti’s team:

“Having Mason Holgate is great news, it will bring back competition for places and that is what Everton need if they want to compete at the very top level,” the former Leeds United and Manchester City defender told Football Insider.

“I am talking about competing for the top six. You cannot just rely on a squad of 13/14 players, not with the fixture pile-up this season.

“Holgate coming back adds not only competition for places but it raises the quality of training and should raise the standards of the whole squad. He’s a real talent.”

Holgate returning to training is great news

Indeed, the fact that Holgate has returned to training for the Toffees is great news as Mills claims. The 24 year-old was a regular for the Blues before his unfortunate injury, as he played in 32 matches over all competitions for Everton last season, scoring one goal and making a further three assists (Transfermarkt).

What year did Moyes first take charge at Everton?

He may be able to bring some stability into the defence given their last two defeats and the added fact that they face Manchester United at home in the top flight next.

Better than Mina

Indeed, Holgate would be a better partner to Michael Keane than Yerry Mina. Comparing the stats of the two central defenders in England’s highest division in the last campaign, he averaged more tackles, interceptions and clearances per match than the Colombia international (Whoscored).

Holgate and Keane at centre-back is the way forward for Ancelotti if they would like to keep more clean sheets.
