Lots of Everton fans have been slamming some comments made by Carlo Ancelotti as to why Niels Nkounkou did not start versus Leeds United in their 1-0 loss at Goodison Park in the Premier League last weekend.

Speaking to the media in his pre-game press conference ahead of the Merseyside club's trip to Burnley tomorrow, the Italian boss said (via Toffee TV):

“Nkounkou, it is not his fault. I have 11 players. The squad is really big. He is still young, he needs more experience. He will have time in the next game.”

Ancelotti decided to play Alex Iwobi as a left wing-back against Marcelo Bielsa's team instead of playing someone who is more naturally suited to playing there in Nkounkou, and in the end his gamble did not pay off as the Toffees ended up losing the match on the day. Tom Davies was on the other flank, which fans lambasted at the time the teams were announced.

The France U21 international has made no more than four senior appearances in the 2020/21 term so far, and only one of those has been in the top flight (Transfermarkt).

Perhaps it is time for Ancelotti to give him a proper chance in the first team given the injury to Lucas Digne.
