Many Everton fans have been left fuming at a preview of the Merseyside derby versus Liverpool by The Guardian.
The national newspaper decided to use images of very bad tackles made by Jordan Pickford on Virgil van Dijk and Richarlison on Thiago during the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park earlier on in the 2020/21 term in the Premier League.
Who will win the Merseyside derby?
There were no pictures of such tackles from Jurgen Klopp’s men, despite it being a pretty fiery derby on both sides, and there was a subtle dig at Carlo Ancelotti’s team with the writer claiming that the game ‘may have shaped Liverpool’s season’, given the long-term injury suffered by Van Dijk as a result of Pickford’s challenge and their struggles to keep up with the current league leaders in Manchester City.
Everton fan reaction to derby preview
These Toffees supporters fumed upon seeing the preview of the derby on Twitter, with one Blue even going as far as to call it ’embarrassing’:
“This is a disgraceful image something you’d expect from the Sun newspaper! Shame on you Guardian going down the gutter press level. @bglendenning @maxrushden is this the standard you’re going for? So disappointed with what used to be a paper with class”
“This is just really embarrassing. Surely you put something about the 2 clubs”
“Massively irresponsible with that picture when all major outlets have been reporting about the vile abuse that players are receiving on social media does this not just add fuel to the flames?”
“Is this journalism on a national paper, or a teenager lfc fan? Very poor taste. Also conveniently missed out the rougher tackles earlier on from the Liverpool players.”
“That’s so much rubbish. Gone right down in my estimation. Blocked.”
“Disgusting image. Van Dijk on James not shown which set the tone of the match.”
