According to a report from The Athletic, Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands has been tasked with reducing the wage bill at Goodison Park in time for next season, with Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson potentially under threat.
Sigurdsson, who signed for the Toffees back in the summer of 2017 for £45m, has not seemed in the best of form recently, with some supporters previously calling for Everton to sell him. Now, with Brands’ new mission to cut the club’s expenses in terms of player wages, Sigurdsson’s Toffees future could be under threat.
The Icelandic international, who signed for Everton after performing heroics to keep Swansea City in the Premier League during the 2016/17 season – scoring nine goals and assisting 13 others – hasn’t been able to replicate that form this campaign. As a result, many Toffees fans are hoping that the 30-year-old is one of many players who could be sold in the summer, with one dismissing him as a ‘terrible player’.

He couldn’t pass a ball on Sunday. Basic things. Ball couldn’t even reach his man. Need to get rid

The lad has seriously lost his way. Not totally his fault. He has worked under SIX coaches if you included Unsy and Duncan, and not one seems to be able to build a successful team around him. Definitely a crossroads, for him and the club.
