Everton: Matthew Pennington potentially on the move

Everton’s Matthew Pennington may become their latest transfer exit after reports of a potential Trabzonspor move.

According to The Star (as per Sport Witness), Trabzonspor have opened talks with the centre-back who once hit the headlines after scoring in a 3-1 Merseyside derby defeat.

They report the Turkish club believe a deal would resemble phenomenal business for the club after a great end to the season saw them claim 4th place in the Turkish Super Liga.

Pennington would become the fourth permanent exit this summer, after Nikola Vlasic completed a £14m move to CSKA Moscow, while Brendan Galloway, Phil Jagielka and Mateusz Hewelt left on free transfers (per Transfermarkt).

Matthew Pennington is probably not a departure that will have much of an impact, considering his lack of first-team involvement. He spent last season on loan with Championship side Ipswich, where he was unable to avoid relegation after finishing bottom of the table.

Ipswich finished the season with an appalling -44 goal difference, conceding a whopping 77 goals with Bolton and Rotherham the only clubs to produce worse results.

The defender, who has one England U19 cap to his name, featured 30 times scoring once in the process – also being sent off in the same game (per Soccerbase).

In regards to his brief Everton career, there’s not much to say for the 24-year-old. Pennington has made just seven appearances, scoring the one goal mentioned above, failing to keep a single clean sheet and making just three tackles (per Premierleague.com).

Right now, the Toffees have Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate currently fighting for a spot, while former on-loan star Kurt Zouma is of reported interest (per Liverpool Echo). Frankly, there simply isn’t the space in the squad for Pennington who, at 24-years-old, needs to start playing regular first-team football.

Everton fans, what do you make of Matthew Pennington’s time at Everton? Is there anything that convinces you he should stay? Comment below!
