Speaking to talkSPORT via the Liverpool Echo, former Everton manager Sam Allardyce has revealed that he once tried to sign Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang while he was a Borussia Dortmund player – with many Toffees supporters since laughing off the notion.
Allardyce, who took charge following Ronald Koeman’s dismissal in late 2017, eventually led Everton to an eighth-placed finish despite a poor start to that campaign. Regardless, the club opted to appoint Marco Silva on a permanent basis after the season’s conclusion, with Allardyce since going on to talk regularly as a pundit.
Speaking to talkSPORT, former England boss Allardyce claimed that he once tried to sign Gunners forward Aubameyang to cope with the departed Romelu Lukaku – suggesting that his team needed goals and the Gabon hitman was in superb form. Instead, Everton opted to sign Cenk Tosun for £27 million that January window – resulting in supporters roasting the ex-Toffees gaffer.
