John Egan has been one of Sheffield United’s key men at the heart of their defence, making a stellar contribution to their promotion last season, and now Adrian Durham thinks Everton should acquire his signature.
Egan, who made 44 Championship appearances for the Blades last season and has started every game of their first year back in the top flight so far, as per WhoScored.com, has shown the qualities of a leader at the back, with Sheffield United boasting the league’s tightest defence.
The Irishman has severely impressed since signing from Brentford in 2018, with TalkSPORT pundit Adrian Durham suggesting it’s potentially time to take another step up and sign for the Merseyside club.
Egan made his Republic of Ireland debut in 2017 during their 1-0 friendly loss to Iceland, with the 27-year-old already having two years’ worth of experience playing for his country on a huge stage.
Speaking on his TalkSPORT Drive Show (via Sheffield United News), Durham suggested Everton should sign manager Chris Wilder before going on to hugely recommend Egan as a potential future leader.
“They also need John Egan because they need a leader at the back, that’s what they’re missing,” explained the pundit.
“(Jordan) Pickford is taking on that role when perhaps a centre-half should be taking on that role. I don’t think they have a vocal enough leader at centre half. They’ve got some decent centre-halves – [Yerry] Mina and [Michael] Keane are okay – but they need leaders in the John Egan mould.”
Indeed, the Toffees’ lack of leadership in defence is up for debate and could be a factor this season if they’re going to turn their bad run of form around – with Egan’s experience of playing consistently and of a high quality warranting talk of a move to Goodison Park.
Question marks are still being raised over manager Marco Silva and his future at the club, so perhaps attempting to bring more leadership to the defence would be worth a try.
Is Marco Silva the right man for Everton?
