Forget loan deal: Man United should sell £22.5m-rated liability this summer

Lindelof

The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are pleased by recent reports which suggest Victor Lindelof is expected to leave the club on loan this summer, but there is reason to suggest Mourinho should offload him on a permanent basis.

Victor Lindlof arrived at Old Trafford with the weight of expectation resting on his shoulders following a big-money transfer from Benfica, and so far the expectation has proven too heavy for him to handle. The Swedish international has won the Portuguese title three times during his career and been capped 19 times by his country, but his experience so far has proven insufficient for him to cope in his new environment.

The pressure at United is up there with the most intense in world football; every mistake is heavily scrutinised and unfortunately for Lindelof he has made a fair few of those this season. And according to The Sun, Jose Mourinho is willing to allow Lindelof to depart the club on loan this summer to enhance his career.

The report claims that Mourinho is a big fan of Lindelof’s but has doubts over him in the short-term, which is understandable given his shaky start to life in English football. However, United would be wise to sell Lindelof this summer to recuperate a fair portion of the money they paid for him, as another season of poor form will drive his value down significantly.

With Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailey and Marcos Rojo all vying for a starting berth alongside Lindelof, it’s clear that something has to budge, so it makes sense for United to sell the 23-year-old flop this summer. Lindelof’s failure to adapt to the Premier League is yet another example of how the Portuguese top-flight is a risky league to purchase players from due to the dramatic difference in quality.

The case of Eliaquim Mangala at Man City should have been a sufficient warning sign for United to abandon their pursuit of Lindelof last summer, but rather than dwelling on a poor decision, United should cut their losses and sell him this summer whilst clubs are still willing to take a chance on him.
