Pep Guardiola has spent the bulk of his tenure at Man City focusing on building the strongest possible side, and the fans in the Transfer Tavern now think that he has secured just that. From front to back, the Man City first team is littered with quality, and that bodes very well for the future of the club.
Now, then, the priority needs to be on ensuring that this group of players stays together. Both through careful squad management and, perhaps more significantly, well-organised contracts, this Man City squad can achieve great things if they are kept together.
Fortunately, according to the Sun, the Citizens are looking to do just that, with a number of players set to hold talks with the club over new deals in the coming weeks and months. To the surprise of our landlord, though, though Leroy Sane is expected to be in line for a new deal, he is far and away from the main priority.
Rather, the likes of Fernandinho and David Silva are, at least according to the Sun, the main focus of the Citizens. This is something that our landlord cannot get his head around. At 21-years-old, Sane is exactly the sort of player that Guardiola will want to have. He’s young, he’s already experienced and he has his best years ahead of him. Even now, every minute that Sane plays serves as an investment in the future, with the German expected to flourish within the next few years. It doesn’t make sense to prioritise the future of the older generation. In the grand scheme of things, whilst they are important, the real priority lies with the young players in the Man City squad.
Not to mention, Sane has been every bit as important as Fernandinho and Silva this season. He has scored 6 goals and earned 6 assists already this season, which, simply put, is a remarkable record. He’s really come of age this year, that much is sure, and he is worth so much more than the reported £60,000 salary that he currently earns.
Pep Guardiola needs to plan for the future, and Sane is exactly that. He is the future of this club, and he must be kept happy and his long-term future must be sorted as soon as possible. Sure, his current deal may not expire for a few years, but they can’t risk anything with this future superstar. Forget sorting it at the end of the season, it needs to be sorted now.
