Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are expecting a lot of movement in and out of Old Trafford this summer, and a defender is surely high on the watchlist.

The regulars in the bar have been watching United for most of the season and feel there’s still something missing within the ranks, despite the huge money spent in recent years. Since they last won the Premier League in 2013, the Red Devils haven’t had a recognised defensive pairing to name, with many pretenders failing to convince.

A lot of chopping and changing has happened, however many in the pub feel that Eric Bailly needs to have a partner to move the club forward. Especially if they are to challenge on a serious note for Premier League titles and the Champions League, something our resident Red Devils are absolutely desperate for.

Mourinho has been linked with raiding his former club and moving for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane. Indeed, this may be a smart move, but our landlord thinks that there are better defenders out there who would fit in at Old Trafford better and here’s TWO…

Toby Alderweireld

The Spurs defender is currently linked with a move to United in the summer, after struggling to find his place in the team following his injury this season, amid off the field issues. The Belgian would be a great addition to the team and one that brings a wealth of Premier League experience with him, as well as the simple fact he’s one of the best in Europe.

Alderweireld is just going into his footballing prime years and that experience could prove vital as United set their sights on reclaiming the title after some years away in the wilderness.

Milan Skriniar

The 23-year-old Slovakian is currently plying his trade in Serie A with Inter Milan and looking like a revelation at the San Siro. He’s been an ever-present fixture in the back line and has been a consistent high performer in the league so far, bringing himself to the fore after impressing for Sampdoria last season. He’s also got an eye for goal when he can get forward, having scored four this season, proving a palpable goal threat.

Skriniar likes to play it from the back and, can often be found dribbling the ball out of defence to start the counter attacks, so would be a big addition at the Theatre of Dreams.
