Noel Whelan has told Football Insider that there will be plenty of interest in Glasgow Rangers’ James Tavernier this summer, and that there is already a number of sides keeping an eye on him.
The 28-year-old is the current captain at Ibrox, and he was in stunning form from an attacking point of view before the previous campaign was prematurely ended, managing 15 assists in all competitions. Premier League side Brighton reportedly have him on their radar, and Whelan appears to believe others will be interested in making a move in the future.

He said when asked if there would be significant interest in Tavernier’s services this summer:
“Absolutely. Tavernier has been captain of Rangers for some time now. A fantastic right-back who gets up and down the line and has an eye for goal.
“He has had interest in him. There will be teams looking at him this summer because this modern day wing-back has to tick every single box. For Rangers he has done that.
“He has the leadership, the desire, is good going forward, at defending and has set piece quality.
“He ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of teams.”
Whilst he is an important figure at the club, there would potentially be little uproar if he were to leave the club in terms of the supporters. Portions of the fanbase do not appear to be his biggest fan, and his defensive ability has been questioned.

With a current Transfermarkt value of £4.32m, Tavernier is one of the most valuable assets in Steven Gerrard’s squad, so if he were to depart, then at least Ross Wilson and co could be looking at a decent fee for his services. Still, he would leave a big hole at right-back, and Gerrard would need to have a clear idea of who to bring in to replace him before sanctioning a sale.
