Glasgow Rangers have missed out on the signing of Thomas Robert – with him instead making the move to Scottish League One side Airdrieonians.

The 19-year-old, who previously represented Montpellier, had been linked with a move to Ibrox, with Celtic also said to be interested in the son of former Newcastle United winger Laurent.

However, in a surprise move, the League One side have snapped up the teenager.

This is not only a blow for the Gers in their attempts to add young talent to their squad for the future, it is also a massive shock that, despite that reported interested from the two biggest clubs in the country, it is a third-tier outfit that has managed to secure the player’s services.
Even the club themselves admitted that this was a “sensational transfer coup” given the interest from other clubs, and that is hard to argue with. He may have just five UEFA Youth League appearances to his name, and is yet to make his bow in professional football, but even the name of his father alone would have probably secured him a spot at a more prestigious club.

As it is, though, Airdrieonians have signed him – at least with him playing in the same country, Steven Gerrard and co will be able to keep an eye on his development.
