The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern have been very pleased with what their side has gotten up to this month so far. They’ve moved quickly to outpace their rivals, having agreed deals for both Diogo Dalot and Fred, and so June has been pretty good for the club.
In truth, they could be only one major signing from having one of their best months in years. Despite picking up two new players, improvements are still needed and so Man Utd can’t rest. That said, another big name will get things off to the best possible start.
They’d struggle to do much better than Frenchman Raphael Varane in their hunt for another big name.
Man Utd’s squad is full of quality, but it’s fair to say that their defence needs further reinforcement. Particularly in the middle, there’s a real need for added stability, and Varane would certainly provide that.
Rated at £63 million by Transfer Markt, Varane has firmly asserted himself as one of Europe’s best defenders. He’s one of the firsts names on the team sheet at Real Madrid, and that’s with good reason.
He’s powerful, he’s agile, he’s fantastic on the ball, and he’s brilliant in the air. In truth, there’s genuinely nothing not to love, and he’s been getting consistently better over the years.
For Man Utd, then, he’d be a worthy investment. He’d immediately add to the quality at the back, and he’d be a comfortable upgrade on anyone else that Mourinho currently has to choose from.
He won’t be cheap, granted, but top quality comes at a premium, and if Man Utd want to send an early statement this summer, they’d struggle to find a bigger name.
