There isn’t much that can get Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern down at the moment. After a strong start to the season under Rafa Benitez, takeover talk is rife on Tyneside and the punters propping up our bar are dreaming about a potentially exciting future.
With Mike Ashley officially putting the club up for a sale, the Geordie contingent are excited about Rafa Benitez could do under an owner willing to back him in the transfer market and, it’s fair to say, their mouths are salivating at the mere thought.
However, former Toon boss Ruud Gullit has issued a stark warning to his former employers. Speaking to beIN Sports and posted on their official Twitter account, the Dutchman warned fans that merely having a new owner guarantees little in the way of success.

He warned that instant success takes a lot of money and claimed buying Newcastle just to make a profit is not the right attitude to have. While it may seem like a downer amid all the excitement, Gullit is probably right.
Surely nothing can get worse than Mike Ashley though? Surely? Surely….
