Liverpool: Harry Wilson’s move to Burnley breaks down

Liverpool have rejected a £12m bid from Burnley for midfielder Harry Wilson, who have subsequently pulled out of talks to capture the Welshman, according to reports.

The 23-year-old has been on the fringes of the first-team squad for some time and has been on loan to several clubs during his time at Anfield, most recently Bournemouth, who were relegated last season.

Before this, the Wales international had two stints in the Championship with Hull City and Derby County respectively, the latter being his better season having scored 15 goals in 40 appearances, as per TransferMarkt. His free-kick against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup is what Wilson is best remembered by during his time at Pride Park.

Despite gaining plenty of first-team experience and getting an entire Premier League campaign under his belt with the Cherries, it hasn’t been enough for him to break into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team.

This attracted the interest of Burnley, who were scouting around him and looking to take him off the Reds’ hands. But The Athletic report that the Clarets have walked away from the deal after having their £12m offer, plus £4m in add-ons, turned down.

They added that Liverpool were looking for a package that totalled closer to £20m, with at least £15m guaranteed, but it seems the Reds may not miss out on a potential £16m windfall.

This latest development once again throws Wilson’s future up in the air, as the 23-year-old’s challenge of cementing his position into the side has just got a lot tougher.

With the arrivals of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich and Diogo Jota from Wolves last month, Wilson has fallen a further two places down the pecking order, regardless of whether he views himself as a midfielder or forward. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah’s relentless form has made his task almost herculean.

It would take a lot of injuries in the team to see Wilson involved. But with the transfer deadline fast approaching, the Welshman could put pressure on the Anfield club for a move if he feels that he will not get a chance with the Premier League champions.

With the Reds now out of the Carabao Cup, it remains to be seen whether Wilson could be involved again this season.
