A defensive horror show against Everton over the weekend was the latest in a long line of poor performances from the Citizens, and it is clear the Pep Guardiola has a lot of work to do at the Etihad.
The defeat will come as a surprise to Guardiola, who is so used to winning regularly, and it reaffirms the sentiment that the Spaniard is facing his toughest challenge yet.
Offensively, the Citizens are fine – but they have some serious problems at the back – and Guardiola needs to act.
With defensive reinforcements at the Etihad a priority for the Citizens, it would appear as though Pep Guardiola has already set his sights on one target – with the Sun noting that Ben Davies is attracting the interest of the Man City brass.
Guardiola clearly has big plans, and if he is able to capture Davies – the Man City defence could prove very different as the season progresses.
With that said, is this the potential new-look Man City defence under Guardiola?
LB – Ben Davies
Whilst not a regular starter at Tottenham, there is no doubting the talent that young Ben Davies possesses.
A talented left-back, Davies would offer a bit of defensive strength on the left-hand side of the Man City defence; an area that has often been exploited in the Premier League.
His versatility is also a vital trait, given that he can also play centrally if absolutely required.
It will be a big step up for the Welshman, but if any manager can oversee that development – it is Guardiola.
CB – John Stones
John Stones has come under fire this season, and you could certainly argue that he has deserved the criticism. He has looked poor in parts this year, and a few poor performances have really cost Pep Guardiola.
However, it is difficult to deny the fact that Stones is one of England’s hottest young prospects, and whilst he has made mistakes – the talent is all there.
He needs to be coached correctly and turned into a fine defender – but that will not happen overnight. Pep Guardiola must persist with his defensive prodigy, and he will get the results in time.
CB – Nicolas Otamendi
Nicholas Otamendi has been unconvincing since moving to the Premier League, but he has improved somewhat over the last few months.
Like Stones, he has been shaky – but he is the best option that Guardiola has at present.
Strong in the tackle and in the air, on his day there are few better defenders – but he just needs to ensure that his day comes more often than it has in the past.
RB – Bacary Sagna
Bacary Sagna has been a fairly consistent member of the Man City defence, though it is clear that his age is catching up to him.
Long-term, Pep Guardiola needs to invest in a bit more depth and an option of a higher quality – but he will have to put up with Sagna for the rest of the season, most likely.
That is not to say that Sagna is not a good player. He is solid down the right and offers an experienced option for Pep.
