The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t sure who Pep Guardiola will bring in this summer, but they’re hoping for more of the same. The Spaniard’s focus on youthful, exciting talent has really paid off over the last few years – with a plethora of young players coming in and helping the Citizens return to the pinnacle of the English footballing pyramid.
This summer, then, signing more young talent seems like a natural and obvious next step – and a move for young Chelsea man Ruben Loftus-Cheek should be on the cards.
Granted, a move for Loftus-Cheek would be audacious – but given Chelsea’s lack of focus on youth, perhaps the Blues could be tempted by a mammoth bid from the Citizens.
Loftus-Cheek plays in a position in which Man City need more quality – central midfield. They’re lacking the depth required in the position, with far too much of an offensive focus. Loftus-Cheek, certainly, is an attacking player – but his energy and pace allows him to help out at both ends of the field, and so he’d offer real balance to this team.
Over the last year, he’s proven on-loan with Crystal Palace that he’s up to the task. He was the star of the show at Selhurst Park, impressing with his dribbling, power, running and goalscoring ability. His fine form led to a call-up for England at the World Cup, and that’s a testament to his quality.
A year or two under Guardiola – who would be able to improve the mental side of his game as well as his passing and movement – could really be the making of him. He’s at a crucial point in his career, and a move to Man City could be beneficial for both parties.
