How Jose Mourinho should line Man United up to batter Liverpool in the ICC later today

Man United are currently on their pre-season tour of the United States, where they secured a victory against AC Milan on penalties last time out. Although, they face an even tougher task in their next outing, as they’ll be looking to overcome the challenges of Liverpool.

The Red Devils have already shown intent during the summer transfer window as they’ve welcomed the likes of Diogo Dalot, Lee Grant and Fred to the club. But, it’s all about how Jose Mourinho can get his current squad to gel together, with a number of players still recovering after the World Cup.

Next up for the Manchester club is a game with rivals Liverpool. Supporters will be desperate for their side to get the better of the Reds in their next outing, as both teams will be fighting for the Premier League title when the campaign starts in the near future, so gaining the upper-hand could prove vital.

The full list of travelling Man United players can be found at Manchester Evening News, and using that list and taking Mourinho’s selection from the last game into consideration, we’ve come up with a team that we think the Portuguese boss could line up with against Liverpool.

MAN UNITED’S POTENTIAL TEAM VS LIVERPOOL

We’ve gone with a 3-5-1-1 formation, as that is the formation that Mourinho used on a number of occasions last season and in United’s last outing against AC Milan. This allows the full-backs to get forward into attacking positions to operate as wingers, while the player in the No 10 role will link up play and support the striker.

The Red Devils will look to give Lee Grant another chance in goal after witnessing his impressive performance against AC Milan last time out.

In defence, United will name an unchanged back three in the form of Chris Smalling, Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly, as the Manchester club will need all the pace at their disposal against a dangerous Liverpool attack.

Antonio Valencia will be gifted a place in the starting lineup after spending the last game on the substitutes’ bench, while Timothy Fosu-Mensah will have a point to prove after being sent out on loan to fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace last season.

Angel Gomes will operate in a slightly advanced role in the middle of midfield as he looks to work his way into Mourinho’s plans for next season. Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay will sit right behind the Portuguese midfielder to balance things out as two of United’s established first-team members.

Lastly, Juan Mata will play just behind Alexis Sanchez in the No 10 role that served him well during his time, with Romelu Lukaku still recovering from the World Cup. The Chilean will lead the line for the Red Devils, with a couple of goals during their pre-season tour putting him back in contention for a starting place when the season gets underway.
