Rangers managed to secure all three points against Motherwell prior to the international break as they scored seven in front of home support at Ibrox.
Steven Gerrard has had plenty of time to reflect on Rangers’ recent results during the international break and will have certainly come up with a few plans to try and avoid conceding as many as they have in the past.
And, with a tough match against Livingston up next and a crucial fixture in the Europa League on the agenda next week, it’s about time Rangers started to ensure some consistency.
However, the Englishman would have kept a close on a number of his players on international duty, with Gareth McAuley, Eros Grezda, Kyle Lafferty and a number of others spending time away.
Gareth McAuley was away on international duty with Northern Ireland during the break and started against Austria in an unfortunate 2-1 defeat. He was able to read the game well and kept Marko Arnautovic in his pocket towards the end of the match, but will be disappointed to have conceded a late goal.
Rangers have had to deal with a number of issues at the heart of the defence in recent times, with Steven Gerrard desperate to witness improvements in weeks to come. The likes of Joe Worrall and Nikola Katic have been criticised for some of their performances in the blue shirt this season, so things are far from settled at the back.
McAuley has only featured twice for Rangers since making the move to Ibrox due to a lack of fitness and injury, but he now looks fit and ready to knuckle down in the Scottish Premiership.
With the 38-year-old back in the swing of things on international duty and performing well, the Rangers boss may finally have found a solution to his defensive problems in the form of the 38-year-old.
