Steven Gerrard was handed one of the biggest jobs in not only Scottish but also British football as a whole.
The former Liverpool man had been managing the under-18s at his hometown club before making the move north of the border. Ever since his arrival at the Glasgow club, the Liverpool legend has become a fan favourite and has already restored ideas of Rangers returning to glory.
Those ideals of glory were inflamed over the summer as the Rangers board brought in the likes of Kyle Lafferty, Lassana Coulibaly, Joe Worral and Ryan Kent to name just a few of their new recruits.
While there have been some high points, domestically, Gerrard’s record in the league hasn’t been very impressive and after 10 games, his record is exactly the same as Pedro Caixinha.
In Europe, Gerrard impressively guided the side through a tough Europa League Qualifying campaign and they currently sit third in their group. Rangers had pulled off a brilliant result away to Villareal but after losing to Spartak Moscow, they now find themselves third in the table.
In their last two league games, Rangers have managed to put together two strong performances. Before that The Gers had only won five games, while losing two. Their most recent win was arguably the club’s best of the season but considering the large investment in the club, the results have not been good enough, especially if they want to beat Celtic to the title.
With the amount of money that was spent on the club in comparison to the other sides in the league, third is well below where Rangers should be.
Going forward, thanks to the exploits of Alfredo Morelos, Rangers have scored 32 goals in the league but still find themselves two points behind Celtic.
There’s no question that Gerrard has improved the side but maybe not to the extent that some fans think. Moreover, as a result of Pedro Caixinha’s terrible year last year, Gerrard’s immediate future is not under threat and he will be given more time. However, the fanfare surrounding Rangers at the moment might be slightly overexaggerated.
