This season, Mauricio Pochettino has had quite the selection dilemma at Tottenham when it comes to midfield.
The likes of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama have had their troubles with injuries, while in the long run, the former might not even be a Tottenham player for much longer.
Dembele has less than a year to run on his contract and there is no signs yet to suggest the 31-year-old will put pen to paper on a new deal, giving Pochettino something to think about.
However, in Moussa Sissoko, the Tottenham boss may already have a successor to the Belgian midfielder.
Largely a peripheral figure in the Tottenham squad since arriving at White Hart Lane from Newcastle United back in 2016, £16.2m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Sissoko has been brilliant this season in a more central position as opposed to the role out wide Pochettino has previously given him.
The 29-year-old played a massive part in Christian Eriksen’s goal in Tottenham’s crucial 1-0 Champions League win over Inter Milan with a bursting run into the box, while his all-round display in his side’s 3-1 victory against London rivals Chelsea was impressive to say the least.
In the absence of Dembele and Wanyama, Sissoko put in a tireless and powerful performance as he helped to neutralise the influence of Chelsea’s midfield and start Tottenham counter-attacks.
All in all, Sissoko has turned a corner under Pochettino and could help permanently solve both Tottenham’s short and long-term midfield issue.
The sheer power he brings to the middle of the park and ability to carry the ball so effectively makes him the ideal replacement for Dembele.
