Introducing: Tottenham’s stale midfield pivot

Since arriving at Tottenham from Southampton back in 2014, Mauricio Pochettino has accomplished a lot.

How well the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli have development under him, in particular, is just one thing the Argentinian is often praised for.

On top of that, though, Pochettino also deserves credit for his work with players slightly further down the pitch.

For years now, Tottenham have been seen as an outfit who the Premier League elite could easily roll over and bully when coming head-to-head.

However, the introduction of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama to the midfield changed that.

With the duo and, if you throw Eric Dier into the equation as well, then Tottenham have since become the bullies.

For all the steel and strength Pochettino has added to the north London club’s midfield with the pivot of Dembele and Wanyama though, it has not come without its drawbacks.

Centrally, Tottenham are now very void of goals and creativity. Since 2016, Dembele has found the back of the net on just one occasion in the Premier League, which really is not good enough considering all of the technical ability the Belgian possesses.

And with Wanyama being a natural holding midfielder, the former Southampton man was never going to bring 10 goals a season to the team.

With that in mind, going forward, Pochettino should really consider looking towards some more creative options when selecting his midfield if Tottenham are to challenge for the title.

The current Premier League champions Manchester City have the likes of David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva who are all capable of doing real damage from central areas of the pitch.

Players of their profile are just one reason why the gap between Manchester City and the rest of the Premier League is so large. If Tottenham want to change that, then midfield is an area Pochettino has to look at in the near future.
