Ipswich Town History

Ipswich Town were formed as an amateur club in 1878; however, they did not turn professional until 1936. The following season after their professionalisation, they won the Southern League at the first attempt and were soon elected to the Football League on May 30th, 1938. Unlike other League One clubs, the Blues have an incredible history which they should be proud of and will always be remembered by others.

Their initial success and claim to fame, came after their back to back English League championships. In 1960-61, Ipswich won Division Two thanks to help of top goal-scorer, Ray Crawford who managed an impressive 40 goals for the Blues. Their success did not stop there however, the following season they went on to win their one and only historic English First Division title in 1961-62 – this an achievement only managed by 24 English clubs.

Despite this great achievement, European football hindered their chances of reclaiming their title, and two seasons later in 1963-64, they were sadly relegated back down to Division Two. Stay up to date with the latest Ipswich Town news from League One here!

Shortly after their spell in the second division, they reclaimed their spot back in the top flight of English football, and in 1977-78, they won the iconic FA Cup for the first time in their history. Ipswich defeated a strong Arsenal side at Wembley by just one goal to nil.

Their triumph was followed up by winning the UEFA Cup in 1980-81, an achievement that only a handful of English clubs can be proud of. Legend, Bobby Robson, led Ipswich into Europe for nine out of ten seasons whilst in charge, and their success came in 1981 after a thrilling 5-4 aggregate win over AZ ‘67, securing the title in Amsterdam after a 3-0 victory at Portman Road. Following the Blues European success, they clinched their spot in the inaugural season of the Premier League after winning the Division Two championship in 1991-92. They spent three seasons in the Premier League before facing relegation in 1995, they later reclaimed their spot in the new millennium; however, this only lasted two seasons. Since then, the Blues have been battling to win promotion back up to the top flight; though, they were surprisingly relegated down to League One for the first time in the clubs history.

Current manager Paul Lambert faces a tough challenge getting the Blues back up to the level they belong, and star player Kayden Jackson who currently has 11 goals and seven assists, will hope to continue his form for the remainder of this season to help clinch their spot in the play-offs.
