The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are not used to seeing their club actively look to discard players as many of their former heroes have made the choice to leave the south coast club in recent times.
The likes of Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana have all decided to depart over the past few seasons and so it seems odd that the club actually want to get rid of some players too.
However, with Claude Puel’s men looking to bounce back from an indifferent festive period and boost themselves into the rest of this season, some players may find their heads on the chopping block as the Saints look to rediscover their form.
It is not all bad news for the resident Saints fan as they have witnessed many good performances this season but a shake-up is important as they look to have a top-half position cemented.
With all that said, here are two players that Puel simply must discard in the next week according to our landlord…
Shane Long

Our landlord may be crazy to suggest that Southampton need to get rid of Shane Long, especially as main striker, Charlie Austin, is currently sidelined with a dislocated shoulder sustained in December.
Simply put, Long simply hasn’t done the business and has frequently frustrated Saints fans in the Transfer Tavern with a return of a singule goal all season. With West Ham and West Brom reportedly interested in the Republic of Ireland international – Long leaving St Mary’s could provide a breath of fresh air to his career.
Harrison Reed

With a host of centre-midfielders ahead of him, our landlord believes it is time for Reed to continue his footballing development elsewhere.
The 21-year-old would have expected to have broken in to the Saints’ side by now but an embarrassment of riches at Claude Puel’s disposal in his position means his development has been stifled. In order to gain first team football, Reed must simply leave St Mary’s.
Our resident Saints fans are sad to see one of their own not getting his chance especially when it is so clear he is not in Puel’s plans.
