The Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are expecting an easy ride in the EFL Cup…
Arsenal have been going well in the Premier League this season – and this Wednesday’s clash against Southampton in the EFL Cup is, for them, just another game…
In reality, though, it represents far more than that – and with Arsenal’s title credentials coming under fire following the reemergence of Chelsea and Liverpool – domestic cup competitions could become vitally important for Arsene Wenger this season.
Southampton have been in good form, and so it is absolutely essential that Arsene Wenger picks the perfect side – and in truth, that will likely mean that a few players sit this one out.
Whether it be through a lack of form, composure or fitness – Wenger must make the right decision for the longevity of the team.
With that said, it’s time for Wenger to drop these 2 Arsenal players against Southampton in the Cup…
Granit Xhaka

Granit Xhaka didn’t perform poorly at the weekend, but in truth – he was far from the best player on the pitch.
There have been some question marks over his head since his arrival, with many in the Tavern questioning whether he has the temperament to succeed in the Premier League; and this could be a crucial factor in deciding Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash.
Wenger cant rely on a player that is unreliable, and Xhaka, at this point, can certainly be described as such.
Wenger would be wise to select a more reliable midfielder like Coquelin on Wednesday.
Nacho Monreal

Nacho Monreal performed fairly well at the weekend, but the game against Southampton could represent a decent oppurtunity for Kieran Gibbs to get a run out.
Monreal has been decent, but against Bournemouth there was a sense that he looked tired, and so it might not be wise for Wenger to insist that he plays 3 games in a 7 day period.
Gibbs is a perfect replacement for the Spaniard, and in truth – he deserves more game time.
