Aston Villa: Dean Smith aims to reveal Josh King as deadline day signing

Aston Villa are pressing on with their attempts to win the race to sign Bournemouth striker Josh King before the domestic transfer window slams shut.

King of Villa Park

The 28-year-old was relegated from the Premier League with the Cherries last season at the expense of Dean Smith’s side, who survived after securing a vital point away to West Ham United on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign.

Despite this, King has proven over the years that he is capable of performing in England’s top flight, scoring 16 goals during Bournemouth’s first Premier League season and finishing off with six last season, taking his career total to 69 at all competitions and levels, as per TransferMarkt.

Villa have been busy this summer, spending £71m and dramatically overhauling their squad to cement their status in the top flight. Their gamble appeared to pay off as they thrashed the reigning champions Liverpool 7-2 before the international break.

According to Football Insider, the Villans don’t appear to be finished there as they look to bring King through the doors of Villa Park before Friday’s cut-off point.

With Smith looking to offload several outcasts in his squad, this could free up room on the wage bill to bring the Norway international, who is currently earning £45,000-a-week at the Vitality Stadium, to the club.

Perfect summer capped off

This news should be music to Villa fans’ ears. Having already seen Ollie Watkins get off to a perfect start, additional firepower at the expense of the injured Wesley will significantly bolster what is already a side that has been greatly strengthened this summer.

Smith has been credited by the Villa Park faithful for the job that he has done in the Midlands, and rightly so. This summer’s transfer activity will be rightly praised if Villa can continue to perform on the pitch after getting off to a perfect start with three wins from three games.

Taking all of the above into account, Villa have the potential to do some great things this season, qualifying for Europe may be a genuine possibility if they can keep their form going into the Christmas period and beyond.

That being said, Smith will have to keep his players’ feet on the ground but King’s arrival, should it happen, will be a huge boost for everyone.
