Rangers: Irish club weighing up Josh McPake move

A club from Northern Ireland are reportedly weighing up a move for Glasgow Rangers gem Josh McPake after scouting him while on loan last weekend.

The Lowdown: McPake dropped

The 21-year-old was dropped from the starting line-up for Queen’s Park in their 1-1 draw at home to Raith Rovers last time out, playing just 29 minutes in total.

He has only played the full 90 minutes in the Scottish Championship once since November, which suggests that he is starting to fall out of favour with the Spiders.

The Latest: Linfield interested in McPake

As per Football Insider, Belfast club Linfield sent scouts to watch McPake in action last weekend, and Rangers are willing to sell him on a permanent deal following his sixth loan spell away from Ibrox.

The youngster will be into the final year of his Gers contract this summer, leaving the club an opportunity to cash in on him before he can leave as a free agent next summer.

The Verdict: Sell him

With six spells away from Rangers, it is difficult to see McPake having a long-term future at the club, especially given that he has only ever made one senior appearance. That came in a first round Europa League qualifier against St Joseph’s of Gibraltar in July 2019 when the Gers already had a 4-0 advantage from the first leg.

Hailed as a ‘really exciting’ player by former Morecambe boss Stephen Robinson after a loan spell there, McPake showed a lot of promise in his early years with the Teddy Bears, winning the Academy Player of the Year in the 2018/19 campaign. However, he is now 21 and has never been able to establish himself in the first team at Ibrox.

A permanent move away would appear to be best for all parties, so that the Scotsman can finally kickstart his career elsewhere.
