Before the Spaniard can begin to identify key targets, he must first assess the quality of the squad at his disposal. Our landlord has opted to evaluate two players that Benitez could keep or sell at Newcastle this summer.

Daryl Murphy

The Irishman’s transfer to Newcastle last season certainly raised a few eyebrows given the striker’s age and affiliation with Sunderland. Twelve months later, the forward’s move to the Magpies seems even more questionable. The 34-year-old has only managed to score six goals in 17 appearances – while it’s important to stress that injuries did hinder his involvement – this goal tally is far from sufficient for a team vying to stay in the most competitive division in world football.

Considering that Mitrovic, Gayle and Perez are all ahead of the Irishman regarding the strikers’ pecking order, the former Sunderland man should look elsewhere to conclude the final stages of his career. Our landlord believes unequivocally that Murphy will be sold this summer.

Jack Colback

Another player who has disappointed at Newcastle has been Jack Colback. Having promisingly started his United career in 2014-15, the Englishman produced many uninspiring performances over the course of the Magpies’ season in the Championship. In 34 appearances in all competitions, the Englishman only managed to provide a single assist to his teammates. If that’s the best he can muster in England’s second tier, then the harsh reality of his situation is that he is no longer good enough to compete in the Premier League.

Our landlord believes that Newcastle should look to sell the midfielder and use the funds attained to reinvest in the squad, to provide Benitez with greater quality. In a season where the Magpies are set to battle for their Premier League status they require players of a premier pedigree, and unfortunately, Colback is no longer considered to be within that bracket of talent.
