Landing Sanchez could bring about the end of this star’s Man City career – Agreed?

Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side come through two mammoth tests to maintain their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League, at the same time extending their incredible winning run.

Pep Guardiola’s men were tipped by many to go on and win the title this term, and they have certainly made their intentions clear by winning 13 of their opening 14 league matches, albeit their most recent two were arguably their toughest yet. The Citizens needed an 84th minute winner from Raheem Sterling to see off David Wagner’s Huddersfield Town on Sunday, and the England international saved the day once again a few days later by curling an unstoppable effort past the despairing Fraser Forster in the sixth minute of injury-time to seal a 2-1 win for Guardiola’s side over Southampton.

Consequently, there have been many thrilled City fans in the Tavern this week, many of whom are daring to dream about what their side could go on to achieve in the second half of the season, both on a domestic and European level.

Elsewhere, there has been plenty for our resident Citizens supporters to get their teeth into recently, not least reports suggesting that they are ready to make a move for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez in January.

The 28-year-old was in scintillating form for the Gunners last term by netting 30 goals and laying on 19 assists for Arsene Wenger’s men, although his future has been subject of speculation for a while now given that his contract expires at the end of the season, and he has yet to agree an extension.

And City are one side reportedly hoping to exploit that by bringing him to the Etihad Stadium in January, in a move which could bring about the end of Sergio Aguero’s time in the North West.

And that’s because the emergence of Gabriel Jesus as the apparent heir to the Argentine’s throne, as well as the qualities Sanchez would bring to the forward line, could leave the 29-year-old facing a fight for regular football.

Ultimately, when Jesus signed for the club back in January of this year, it became reasonably clear that he was to be Guardiola’s main man – the Brazil international played just eight minutes of Premier League football before he was given back-to-back starts at Aguero’s expense against West Ham and Bournemouth.

If it wasn’t for Jesus’ injury against Bournemouth, which ruled him out of the succeeding seven league games, Aguero could well have found himself on the bench for the remainder of the campaign such was the 20-year-old’s incredible start to life in England.

But it’s what else Jesus brings to the forward role which seems to resonate with Guardiola, namely his relentless work-ethic and ability to lead from the front, and they are traits also found in Sanchez’s game, as exemplified pretty much throughout his time at Arsenal.

And having played under Guardiola before at Barcelona, the Spaniard knows exactly what he’s going to get with the Chile international, and the fact he’s been regularly linked with the 28-year-old in the last 12 months or so speaks volumes about how much he wants him at the Etihad Stadium – they even had a bid rejected late on in the summer.

Clearly, his arrival would add even greater competition to a forward line already bursting with attacking talent, and could ultimately see Aguero facing time out of the starting eleven. And with a World Cup to come in the summer, he’ll be wanting regular football to both make the Argentina squad and make a difference in Russia.

And with clubs already interested in the Argentine’s services, Real Madrid being one of them, the arrival of Sanchez could well bring about the end for City’s all time leading goal-scorer.
