Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has provided an under-the-radar update on striker Joe Gelhardt following his injury scare on Monday evening.

The Lowdown: Gelhardt limps off

The 19-year-old has established himself as a first-team player over recent months but on Monday he made his first appearance for the under-23s since December.

Gelhardt started at Elland Road against Crystal Palace in a 4-0 win but was forced off in the first half holding his left leg.

The Yorkshire Evening Post labelled it as ‘bad news from Elland Road’, although it looks as if the Whites are hopeful that the injury isn’t too serious.

The Latest: Hay’s post on Gelhardt

Hay was asked by a Leeds supporter on Twitter for an update on the teenager on Tuesday afternoon. The reliable reporter replied, with his response going under the radar with just 65 likes from his 221,000 followers:

“Initial diagnosis was dead leg, was due to have more assessments today.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Jesse Marsch already has Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts out through injury, so it would be a nightmare for the Leeds manager if Gelhardt were to join them on the treatment table.

Hopefully the youngster’s issue is just a dead leg, as Leeds first thought, which may put him in contention to travel with the squad to face Watford this weekend.

However, if the teenager is ruled out, Marsch may once again have to rely on the out-of-form Dan James in a central role, with just Sam Greenwood to call upon from the bench.
