Leeds United are preparing for their highly anticipated return to the Premier League next month and are now in prime position to sign one of their top targets.
A move for former Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has been widely reported over the last few months, and today the talented goalscorer confirmed his exit from the North East club.
In a heartfelt statement on social media, the 33-year-old revealed that he would not be extending his stay on Tyneside and will move onto the next chapter of his career.
The signing of a new striker will be a high priority for Leeds this summer as they attempt to re-establish themselves in the top flight, two years after suffering relegation to the Championship.
Versatile forward Lukas Nmecha has already been signed on a free transfer, while Everton’s Beto and Fulham star Rodrigo Muniz have both been named as potential targets to bolster the attacking threat.
Adding a player with a wealth of Premier League experience to their attacking threat would put them in an advantageous position to achieve their targets next season.
As a result, today’s news that Wilson has decided to leave Newcastle has opened up a huge opportunity for Leeds to snap up his services ahead of the new campaign.
Should Leeds sign Callum Wilson?

There is no doubt that Wilson has the Premier League experience and leadership skills to be a valuable asset in the Leeds dressing room.
Wilson began his Premier League journey with Bournemouth under Eddie Howe, where he quickly established himself as a prolific forward, which ultimately led to a move to Tyneside in 2020, ahead of their Saudi-led takeover.
His performances in black and white earned him England call-ups, including a place in Gareth Southgate’s FIFA World Cup squad in 2022, and he went on to become a pivotal figure at Newcastle, wearing the number nine shirt with distinction.
The signing has the potential to be a masterclass move as Leeds could bag themselves one of the best finishers in the top flight, but that will all depend on whether Wilson can stay fit next season.
The former Bournemouth star – once hailed a “unique striker” by ex-Newcastle interim boss Graeme Jones – does have a concerning injury record that would rightly make fans cautious about the signing.
Despite scoring 49 times and delivering 11 assists during his five-year stint with the Magpies, Wilson has been riddled with injuries for the majority of the 2024/25 campaign, which should ring alarm bells for Daniel Farke.
With that being said, it will be interesting to see if the club take a gamble on the England international this summer or whether his lack of availability over the last 12 months will put them off a move.
