Their most expensive signings of all time are a mix of success stories and horror shows, showing how difficult it has been to return to the big time and stay there with the help of clever recruitment.
But who have been Leeds’ priciest arrivals? We’ve taken a dip into the archives and had a look at their top 10 transfers.

10: Rio Ferdinand (2000)
Signed from West Ham for £18m
Leeds looked to press home their Premier League ambitions with the signing of Rio Ferdinand from West Ham United in November 2000.
It was a British record deal that saw the defender arrive at Elland Road, with Ferdinand and Leeds ending the campaign as Champions League semi-finalists, while salvaging a third-placed league finish after a slow start domestically.
Leeds never realised their true potential as financial problems bit, leaving transfers like this having fans wondering what could have been. Ferdinand was sold for £30m less than two years later.

9: Jean-Kevin Augustin (2020)
Signed from RB Leipzig for £18m
Perhaps the most disastrous deal on this list, Leeds’ agreement to sign Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan with an obligation to buy became fraught with difficulties.
Augustin was signed with the Whites aiming to finally return to the Premier League after 16 years away, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side settling on a January loan ahead of a potential £18m move in the event of promotion.
However, the pandemic – and Augustin’s uneventful 48 minutes of game time – put a spanner in the works, and the club initially argued that the obligation clause had elapsed, with the 2019/20 campaign not concluding until July.
In the end, Leipzig took them to court, where Leeds were ordered to pay £24.5m in compensation, despite Augustin never joining permanently. Yikes.

8: Diego Llorente (2020)
Signed from Real Sociedad for £18m
Leeds bolstered their defence after their promotion-winning campaign, signing Real Sociedad’s Diego Llorente for £18m in September 2020.
The Spaniard joined Robin Koch as the new defensive arrivals at Elland Road, as the Whites finished ninth in their first top-flight season since 2004.
After leaving on an 18-month loan to Roma in January 2023, Leeds’ failure to win promotion led to his permanent departure, with Llorente returning to Spain with Real Betis.

7: Noah Okafor (2025)
Signed from Milan for £18m
One of Daniel Farke’s new signings following promotion in 2024/25, former Milan forward Noah Okafor helped give Leeds’ frontline a fresh look, alongside the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha.
Okafor wasn’t exactly prolific for his former club, but becoming the Whites’ biggest outlay since winning the Championship for a second time this century is a show of faith in the Switzerland international.

6: Tyler Adams (2022)
Signed from RB Leipzig for £20m
Leeds manager Jesse Marsch sought to bolster his relegation-dodging side with a familiar face, signing compatriot Tyler Adams from his former club, RB Leipzig.
Adams – nor Marsch – didn’t last long at Elland Road, with the Whites suffering relegation in 2023.
The United States midfielder was soon off to Bournemouth, though Leeds were at least able to recoup the £20m they initially invested in him.

5: Luis Sinisterra (2022)
Signed from Feyenoord for £21m
Another Marsch signing in the summer of 2022 saw the arrival of Colombian winger Luis Sinisterra, who arrived from Feyenoord for around £21m.
Unfortunately, his signing was another expensive gamble that didn’t pay off, with Sinisterra even treading the same path as Tyler Adams by joining Bournemouth a season later for a similar fee.

4: Daniel James (2021)
Signed from Man Utd for £25m
Leeds finally got their hands on long-term target Daniel James by paying Manchester United rather handsomely for the winger, after a proposed loan move had fallen through at the 11th hour back in January 2019.
James’ stint at Old Trafford did not turn out as planned, giving Bielsa’s Leeds the opportunity to lure the Welshman to West Yorkshire for £25m.
He was an integral part of their eventual survival in his first season, registering nine goal involvements (only Raphinha had more with 13).
James moved briefly to Fulham in 2022/23 before playing a key role in Leeds’ journey back to the top flight.

3: Brenden Aaronson (2022)
Signed from RB Salzburg for £25m
United States international Brenden Aaronson was Leeds’ marquee summer arrival in what was meant to be American coach Jesse Marsch’s first full campaign at Elland Road.
Things started to unravel for the club as they went down after three seasons back in the top flight, with Aaronson failing to back up his £25m transfer fee after scoring just once.
After a season in the German Bundesliga, Aaronson returned to help Leeds secure promotion from the Championship in 2024/25, scoring nine times as he featured in every game.

2: Rodrigo (2020)
Signed from Valencia for £26m
Rodrigo became the club’s record signing when he joined in the summer of 2020 as a considerable coup from Valencia following the Whites’ promotion.
The Spaniard wasn’t wholly prolific in Leeds colours, though he did contribute to their ninth-placed finish in 2020/21 and hit a personal best of 15 Leeds goals in the 2022/23 campaign – his last for the club.
That tally meant he’d recorded a greater goals-per-game ratio at Elland Road than at Valencia, but things came to an abrupt end following their relegation in 2023.

1: Georginio Rutter (2023)
Signed from Hoffenheim for £36m
Leeds went for broke as they looked to survive the drop in the 2022/23 Premier League season, signing Georginio Rutter for £36m.
While Leeds’ Premier League status slipped away, Rutter remained at Leeds and starred in the Championship before suffering play-off final heartbreak, with his 22 goal contributions ultimately counting for nothing.
The only solace is that both parties had happy endings of sorts, with Leeds selling Rutter that summer to Brighton for £40m before securing promotion as champions without him in 2024/25.
