Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been tipped to be Gini Wijnaldum's replacement at Liverpool, being hailed as a potential "magnificent signing" for the Reds.

The Lowdown: Phillips excelling for club and country

Phillips has been one of the most important players of the Marcelo Bielsa era at Elland Road, playing a major role in them returning to the Premier League as well as thriving in the top flight.

The 25-year-old is also now impressing for England at Euro 2020, producing a Man of the Match performance in the 1-0 win over Croatia.

The form of Phillips has unsurprisingly seen him linked with a move to some huge clubs this summer, which will no doubt worry some Leeds supporters.

The Latest: Phillips could be 'magnificent' for Liverpool

Speaking to Football Insider, former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips believes that the Leeds midfielder could be a perfect replacement for Wijnaldum at Liverpool. The 47-year-old said:

"I think (Curtis) Jones is a good player. But if Liverpool want to compete for the Champions League and Premier League again next season, you need to go out and spend money.

“Someone like Kalvin Phillips on the other hand, imagine him at Liverpool. I think he’d be a magnificent signing for them. He’s got that great big-game mentality, we saw that against Croatia.

"I don’t think too many Leeds fans would thank me for it, but imagine him in a Liverpool shirt. He’d be a tremendous replacement.

"He can play that slightly more advanced role. He can get forward and get back, he’s got such great energy and he’s got a range of passing."

The Verdict: Expect Phillips to stay

Although there is plenty of noise surrounding Phillips' future at Leeds, it would be a surprise if he left in the coming weeks and months.

The midfielder will surely want to play his part in Bielsa's side pushing towards the European places in 2021/22, looking to write another great chapter in the club's history.

Admittedly Phillips' head may be turned one day, especially if Leeds don't kick on again, but he should be at Elland Road for another season at least given the regular role he has played in their excellent fortunes over the last couple of years.
