Rodrigo’s performance as a false nine in Leeds United’s defeat to West Ham could be big news for the Whites this season, according to Phil Hay.
The Lowdown: Rodrigo impresses in defeat
Marcelo Bielsa’s side suffered a hugely disappointing 2-1 loss at the hands of the Hammers on Saturday, with concerns certainly starting to emerge at Elland Road after such a devastating late defeat.
One positive was Rodrigo’s display, however, with the Spaniard doing well leading the line in the absence of the injured Patrick Bamford.
The Latest: Hay makes key claim
Taking to Twitter on Tuesday and plugging an article relating to the subject, The Athletic‘s Hay suggested in a six-word verdict that playing Rodrigo as a false nine could be a success moving forward:
“Could spark Leeds United into life.”
The Verdict: Bad news for Bamford?
It is easy to forget that Rodrigo is Leeds’ record signing and he clearly has lots of quality, so this false nine audition could be something to persevere with.
Bamford’s return will clearly make that an issue, however, but if Bielsa feels Rodrigo is excelling in that role, he may have no hesitation in leaving Bamford out – the Whites boss has never been one to shy away from big decisions.
It is one to keep an eye on, starting at home to Watford in the Premier League on Saturday, and with Bamford not exactly starting the season on top form, it could be bad news for the now England international if Rodrigo really shines once again.
In other news, a pundit has made a huge claim regarding Leeds’ January business. Read more here.
